Summer earned her Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California in 2003. She served in the California Army National Guard from 2009-2017 as a Brigade Physical Therapist.
During her diverse career, she has been a Director of Rehab for 12 years combined in outpatient rehab and skilled nursing settings. Summer is a Certified Geriatric Care Professional (CGCP).
She has successfully treated people from middle school aged through end of life in out-patient civilian and Army clinics, acute and subacute hospitals, field hospitals, military prisons, skilled nursing facilities, independent and assisted living facilities, and in clients’ homes.
Summer has a passion for healing with a comprehensive approach using differential diagnosis, expert manual therapy skills, modalities, exercise prescription and behavior modification.
More About Summer:
Summer knew by age 13 she wanted to be a PT because she loved science, expressed awe of the human body and wanted to help people in a meaningful, personal way. She was a foreign exchange student to Italy through the American Field Service (AFS) for her junior year in high school and returned to the United States that summer and attended The National Youth Leadership Forum on Modern Medicine highlighting physical therapy in Houston, Texas at Rice University.
Right after high school she earned a certification in massage therapy, and supported her university and graduate school expenses with a portable massage business as well as serving and managing in a fine dining restaurant in her hometown of Redlands, CA. At 18, she spent 6 weeks with her Auntie in Australia who is a physiotherapist for observation in the field. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Minor in Chemistry from the University of Redlands. She went on to earn her Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy from USC.
In her free time, she enjoyed playing volleyball, running, and swimming from grades 9-12, then she became an avid yogi, hiker, rock climber, dirt biker, mountain biker, sports motorcyclist and skier. She even tried skydiving 3 times but stopped there! Golf is a newer passion! Summer over the years has enjoyed spirituality and self-actualizing, salsa dancing, creative writing and poetry, reading, playing and composing music, singing, doing calligraphy and painting. She loves to build and refurbish furniture and teaches herself to be a jack of all trades. She loves to converse in Spanish and Italian. Traveling and cooking are particular joys!
Summer met Keith during one of her final clinical internships, and they reunited through a miracle of events 5 years later and married. She joined the California Army National Guard as a 65 Bravo Physical Therapist for 8 years and retired as a Captain. One highlight was doing wilderness medical rescue training in Yosemite! With Keith’s military career, they have lived all over California, Kansas, and Hawaii. Summer and Keith share two beautiful children who are growing up right here in Chattanooga!
Keith graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Physical Therapy Degree from Cleveland State University in 1995. He specialized in orthopedic care and sports medicine in Ohio and Southern California, going on to become Director of Outpatient Therapy at Rancho Casa Colina.
After 9-11 Keith served over twenty years in the U.S. Army and continued to see patients independently of the military. He went on to get his Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Western University Health Sciences and a Masters Degree in Strategic Science at U.S. Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, PA. He is certified in Isernhagen Functional Capacity Evaluation and Ola Grimsby Orthopedic Manual Therapy.
Dr. Haviland has enjoyed working with service members across his career in meeting their full potential and return to readiness. Keith retired from the Army in July 2023 after 34 years of service.
More About Keith:
Following graduation from Lakewood High (Ohio), Keith enlisted Infantry in the U.S. Army in July 1986. After basic training, he went to Air Assault and then Ranger school where he sustained injuries to both his legs during a fall climbing frozen cliffs in Dahlonega, GA. Those injuries brought Keith to his first encounter in Physical Therapy (PT). He responded very well to treatment and gained a great appreciation for the Art and Science of PT.
After his enlistment, he was called up for Desert Storm. Upon his return to University he was awarded a full Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship. He excelled scholastically and in ROTC, earning the Distinguished Military Graduate for his class (1995) and selected for Golden Key International Honors Society. He had a most powerful personal experience during his Physical Therapy education at the J.A. Haley Veteran Affairs Hospital in Tampa Bay, FL bonding with the Veteran clients, and knew that giving back to the Veteran Community would always be a lifelong pursuit.
His civilian Physical Therapy career was significantly altered by the events of 9-11. In the aftermath, he chose to serve his Nation on Active status, culminating in a four year “hitch” at U.S. INDOPACOM at Camp Smith, HI. During his last year of Service, he and Summer sketched out their plan to build their lifelong dream – their own PT Clinic. The Army tempted Keith in staying on by offering him Colonel, but their desire to pursue this goal outweighed the honor of wearing “Full-Bird”.
Deciding where to build this clinic and lay roots was a huge decision for both of them. His brief but meaningful trips to Chattanooga from Fort Benning, GA gave him a hint to the future. After visiting the Chattanooga area with the whole family, they knew they had a new forever home and a place to lay down roots. Together Keith and Summer quickly set in motion to purchase a house and set up their clinic on Shallowford Road. Keith enjoys hiking and outdoor adventures. He is a member of several service organizations (Veteran of Foreign Wars, AMVETS, Wounder Warrior Project, the Elks and Project Healing Waters).
